How to Study Effectively Before Exams

For many students, the pressure of writing exams can make one feel unprepared, discouraged and stressed. Suddenly the months have moved fast, and you are wondering you will cope with all that work. Here are a few tips to help you stay calm and focused.

  • Study plan – like everything else in life, a good plan is necessary in ensuring success in whatever endeavour you undertake. Plan your time, schedule study blocks and breaks. Also allow time for revision. Identify your subjects. This also helps in identifying your weakest subjects or topics whereby you might need to spend more time.
  • Find a suitable environment – an ideal environment with minimum disruptions. Gather all the materials and equipment needed. Find what works best for you, it may be at the library or at home. Try to take care of your health as much as possible. Get enough sleep, eat nutritious foods, and exercise regularly.
  • Learning Techniques – examples of active learning
    • Brain dumping – Before reviewing material for a test, write down everything you currently know about a topic on a blank sheet of paper, then check for gaps.
    • Interleaving – Instead of studying one subject for hours, rotate between different topics or skills. This forces your brain to work harder and adapt.
    • Concept mapping – Create visual flowcharts, diagrams, or outlines to connect different ideas and synthesize your notes.
  • Practice past exam papers – past exam papers help with the format of the exam, timing your exam and identifying common question patterns. This will give you confidence going into the exam.
  • Pomodoro technique – this is a time management method in which you study for 25 minutes and then break for 5 minutes. This structure helps you get started when procrastinating, breaks sessions into smaller and manageable tasks, and reduces mental fatigue.

All the best with your exams. You are capable and you’ve got this.
